Extended Care
Since 1958, seniors have received specialized services and individualized care at Madonna. Through Madonna St. Jane de Chantal Extended Care Services, that dedication to service continues today. The residents drive our commitment for care. They share their wisdom, experiences and hope for the future. We aspire to return these blessings through exceptional care and personal attention to each resident.
- Extended care history
The Benedictine sisters of Yankton, South Dakota, founded Madonna in 1958. Three frame buildings on a 23-acre campus housed what was then called the Madonna Home, a long term care facility for the elderly in the heart of Lincoln. Built on the belief that the individual human life has immeasurable value, the facility began early to earn its reputation for excellence.
Madonna has continued to grow and change from those early years. However, our commitment to quality care for persons in need of long term care has never wavered.
In 2003, Madonna's long term care program was renamed after the Catholic saint
Jane de Chantal. This title was chosen as the namesake because St. Jane's life and beautiful story reflects our standard for quality services. St. Jane (1562 to 1641) was known for sharing her blessings and for her deep commitment to God. She founded the Visitation Order of Sisters and believed every person, regardless of health or age, was special and deserved the best. She was noted for her gentle and loving approach
to spirituality.
Today, inspired by St. Jane de Chantal, we follow her path to create a hospitable and warm environment for our residents to call home.
- Extended care service
Every member of the Madonna St. Jane de Chantal team is committed to creating a fulfilling future for the people we serve by welcoming them into the Madonna family and ensuring that each resident maintains the highest optimal level of functioning. Guided by our Core Values, which reflect Madonna's history, mission and beliefs, employees at Madonna are passionate about caring for our residents.
These values: Collaboration, Hospitality, Respect, Innovation, Stewardship and Teaching, serve as our foundation of service. We recognize the importance of each value independently and as part of the whole.
- Extended care knowledge
Our expert interdisciplinary team includes registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, certified nursing assistants, nursing associates, social workers, registered dietitians, physical, occupational, speech and recreation therapists, psychologists, an MDS coordinator, restorative aides and spiritual care advisors as well as many people who serve in support roles such as food service, housekeeping, laundry and maintenance.
At Madonna St. Jane, direct care staff is trained using the "Best Friends Approach to Care." This approach is most commonly used with members of the St. Jane family with Alzheimer's or dementia, however, its basis is universal. A "Best Friend" is a family member, friend or member of the resident's care team who empathizes with the resident's situation, remains loving, positive and dedicated to ensuring the resident has a sense of security and value. Staff members get to know each resident's life story, preferences and interests in order to better enhance and personalize the resident's experience.
- Extended care joy
Madonna St. Jane offers a welcoming atmosphere filled with warm, abundant light. High ceilings and many windows draw natural light and create a space which brings the outdoors in. Each of the spacious rooms has a large picture window with scenic views of the campus and courtyards. Wide hallways and large community areas create environments perfect for engaging in social interactions.
Peer and community involvement play an important role in a fulfilling life at Madonna St. Jane. Residents share stories, participate in group activities and enjoy a meal in our seven, well-appointed, communal areas. The Nebraska Room is specially designed as a gathering place for recreation activities and family-style dining with select menu options. Daily activities are designed with each resident's needs and interests in mind. Each day begins with an optional exercise class. Residents and recreation therapists collaborate to organize special events, group activities and community outings.
