Effects of subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) on perceptual and acoustical
measures of speech in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD): preliminary results

Hypokinetic dysarthria can affect approximately 89% of patients with PD (Logemann et al, 1978). STN-DBS is an effective treatment for the improvement of limb movements (Limousin et al., 1998). However, dysarthria is a less predictable symptom than global motor disability in terms of response to STN-DBS.
