2007 Madonna Chairman's Goal Awards

The Madonna Chairman's Goal Awards were established in 1994 to honor patients for outstanding courage and fortitude while confronting a disability. Recipients are selected by committee from nominations made by Madonna clinical staff. Recipients' photographs and their stories are on permanent display on Madonna's "Wall of Honor" as an inspiration to others.

Bill Cintani, Chair of Madonna's Board of Directors and President and CEO of Mapes Industries, presented the 2007 Goal Awards to:

  • Fred Daigle, a 72-year old stroke survivor from Lincoln, Neb., who overcame serious physical limitations and has returned to an active life, including playing with his grandchildren and providing lawn care for his elderly neighbor. Daigle's wife Mary Jo, who worked as a registered nurse before her retirement said, "I chose Madonna because I knew it was a rehabilitation hospital, and I knew he would need rehabilitating."

  • Heather Tice, a teenage student from Belton, Mo., who became paralyzed from the waist down after a car wreck. At Madonna, Tice had to relearn tasks to help her become independent, such as dressing herself and brushing her hair and teeth. Today, she drives a hand-controlled car and is a vocal advocate for ThinkFirst Missouri, a non-profit organization that educates the public on ways to prevent traumatic injuries. "I could never express in words how much my Madonna team has helped me. And I don't think they will ever fully understand how grateful I am for them," Tice said.

  • Deb Spanyers, a wife, mother and the Saline County Treasurer in Dorchester, Neb., contracted West Nile virus from a mosquito bite in 2005. Her condition later developed into Meningitis and Guillain-Barre syndrome. Spanyers worked hard in rehabilitation and has returned to her many roles. She credits her much of her success to the specialized care she received at Madonna, Nebraska's only rehabilitation hospital.

  • Brady Beran, a 20-year old student from Lincoln, Neb., suffered a traumatic brain injury during a high school football game and endured several dangerous surgeries. Beran credits support from his Madonna rehabilitation team, family, friends and prayer for his remarkable recovery. He is now in college and gives back by volunteering on Madonna's Community Council, as well as throughout the Lincoln community.

  • The Thomas Hayes Business Leadership Award will be presented to Siebert and Associates, an adaptive equipment and transportation company based in Glenwood, Iowa. Siebert and Associates is the only provider of vehicle modifications in the Midwest region that is accredited for quality assurance by the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association. The representatives visit Madonna regularly to advise clinicians and patients regarding adaptive transportation options.
