Ventilator Assistance & Special Needs: Overview

The Ventilator Assisted/Special Needs Unit (VAU/SN) at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital is licensed as a long term care nursing facility. It is a growing 38-bed unit which offers long term care for residents on ventilators or for those who have complex medical needs. The area utilizes an interdisciplinary team approach that specializes the care plan for each individual resident and to identify goals for each resident.

The VAU/SN unit has two separate programs to treat residents with complex medical needs.

Ventilator Program

The Ventilator program is designed for residents who spend more than 10 hours in a 24 hour period on the ventilator who require interdisciplinary care, including daily respiratory therapy intervention. Appropriate participants are long term care residents who:

  • Will use a ventilator indefinitely
  • Are in the process of weaning from the ventilator
  • Are on a ventilator and need training in order to transition back to their home setting with caregiver support

Special Needs Program

The Special Needs Program is a short term program for residents with complex medical needs. The treatment for residents in this program may include:

  • Wound management
  • IV therapy
  • Ventilator management
  • Care in multiple body organ systems
  • Interdisciplinary approach
  • Nutrition with complex needs
  • Tracheostomy care
  • Hemodialysis or CAPD
