The goal of Madonna's Burn Program is to help each individual return to the highest level of functioning and independence as possible, improving the overall quality of life for each individual physically, emotionally and socially. Burn rehabilitation includes comprehensive, multidisciplinary specialized care that may last over an extended period of time.
Key Program Features include:
Treatment by a consistent team of clinicians who each have special training in burn rehabilitation facilitates quick responses to any problems or issues, resulting in faster healing and functional improvement. Inpatients are seen daily by an internal medicine and/or physician who specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation (physiatrist). Physicians with other medical expertise are consulted as needed.
Designated rooms ensure privacy and easy access to exclusive showers, decrease the risk of infection and preserve each individual's dignity.
A pre-admission team visits each patient during their acute care stay to ease the transition to rehabilitation, reducing anxiety for patients and their family members, and ensuring effective continuity of care and consistent use of appropriate medical equipment and supplies.
Comprehensive educational packets are provided and work as a supplement to verbal instruction with demonstrations for patients and their family members. Topic areas include: access to benefits and support systems, adaptive techniques and equipment for completion of activities of daily living (ADL), use of assistive devices, caregiver skills, community re-entry skills, community resources, driving, edema control, emotional recovery, care and use of pressure garments, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and wellness, home modifications, safe relief of itching, adaptive sports and recreation, personal life roles and areas of participation, medications, mobility, nutrition, pain management, creation/maintenance of a personal health profile, prevention of burns, prevention of secondary complications after a burn, skin care, sun protection, scar management, temperature regulation and return to work. Multimedia resources are available and provide long-term resources for concerns that may arise after discharge.
Comprehensive non-surgical scar management techniques, such as manual scar mobilization and localized stretching are taught to patients and their caregivers to continue outside therapy sessions for the best results.
Consultation with community based therapists or others, such as school system, for easier transition back to each individual's home community and life roles.
Depending upon the specific needs of each individual patient, the burn team is made up of members from several different disciplines, including:
