Each patient's rehabilitation program is directed by a physician who specializes in physiatry (physical medicine and rehabilitation) and the overall medical care by a pediatrician. Both doctors visit each patient daily Monday through Friday and are actively involved in treatment planning, meeting with the rest of the team on a daily basis.
Dr. Adam Kafka is a Lincoln native and graduated with a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. After an internship in Internal Medicine at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, he completed the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency program at the University of Wisconsin.
Dr. Kafka oversees all physiatry needs for pediatric patients in The Alexis Verzal Children's Rehabilitation Hospital at Madonna.
Adolescent and Children Rehabilitation Program Medical Director
As the pediatric hospitalist for the inpatient pediatric rehabilitation program, Dr. Amy Holst develops and implements individualized treatment plans to manage the medical needs of our pediatric patients. Dr. Holst is a pediatrician that specializes in the management of hospitalized children. She collaborates with the rehabilitation team and the physiatrist to maximize the child's recovery while attending to any medical concerns. Dr. Holst is a 1997 graduate of the University of Nebraska Medical Center medical school and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
As Program Manager, Amy Nordness is responsible for the overall management of the Adolescent & Children's Rehabilitation Program in The Alexis Verzal Children's Rehabilitation Hospital, including provision of clinical leadership and program development, quality improvement and outcomes management, referral development, and customer relations.
As Pediatric Program Manager, Dr. Amy Nordness is responsible for the overall management of the Adolescent & Children's Rehabilitation Program in The Alexis Verzal Children's Rehabilitation Hospital, including provision of clinical leadership and program development, quality improvement and outcomes management, referral development and customer relations.
Dr. Nordness earned a Bachelor of Science degree in speech-language pathology from the Marquette University, a Master of Science in speech-language pathology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) in 2001, and a Ph.D. in communication disorders at UNL in 2011. Before joining Madonna, Dr. Nordness was a speech-language pathologist at the Munroe-Meyer Institute for Genetics Rehabilitation at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. She held academic positions at Western Illinois University (WIU) in Macomb, IL, a graduate assistantship at UNL and was a pediatric speech-language pathologist at Madonna. Her specialties include motor speech disorders and augmentative and alternative communication.
Madonna has a dedicated team of inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation professionals who have completed pediatric competency training and testing, so have the skills necessary to integrate each child/adolescent's developmental as well as medical needs. In addition to the rehabilitation physician, each child/adolescent's team is made up of physical, occupational, speech, recreational, nutrition, and respiratory therapists as well as an educational specialist, neuropsychologist, social worker, rehabilitation nurse and case manager.
Together they work to meet the age and diagnosis-related physical, cognitive, social and emotional needs of the children and adolescents we serve. Madonna is the only rehabilitation hospital in Nebraska that has a full staff of specially trained rehabilitation and neuropsychologists on-site who are an integral part of the team, participating in team meetings, leading behavioral intervention plans, and providing counseling and support for both the patient and their family members.
