Amputation Program: Outcomes

Amputation Program Outcomes

Outcomes

During the fiscal year July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2009 Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital discharged 45 inpatients and 14 new outpatients with amputation.

Several standard measurements are used to assess the outcomes of persons served, comparing these outcomes against benchmarks.

* FIM is a 7-point tool used by rehabilitation hospitals throughout the nation to assess a patient's function in 18 areas, including self-care, bowel and bladder function, transfers, locomotion, communication and cognition. Maximum score on FIM is 126.

** FIM+FAM is a 7-point tool that includes the FIM plus 12 additional items that address higher functional activities such as community access and work or school re-entry. Maximum score on the FIM+FAM is 210.

  • Discharge Destination On average, patiens were admitted 11 days post-operatively compared with the regional benchmark of 22 days post-op. Average length of stay on AR was 13 days. 66.7% of patients with amputation served on AR were discharged to a community setting, which is higher than the regional benchmark (63.7%). 12% were discharged to an acute care hospital, most of them for planned surgical procedures.

  • Functional Gain Patients with amputation served on acute rehabilitation made excellent functional gains as measured by 15.5 gain on the FIM scale. Average discharge FIM scores were 90.2 which is higher than the regional benchmarks (85) for this population.

  • Average Length of Stay Inpatients served on AR with amputation stayed an average of 13 days. On LTACH, where some patients with amputation were served primarily for our Wound program, the average length of stay was 37 days.

  • Outpatient Functional Gain Individuals with amputation scored 53 out of 56 on a functional scale, reaching 95% of maximum score at discharge.

  • Predicted Outcomes On average MRH inpatients with amputation achieved 78.1% of the goals set on admission.

  • Satisfaction 75% of inpatients with amputation rated their overall experience as "Excellent", exceeding Madonna's internal target of 65%.

  • Outpatient Functional Change Outpatients with amputation served in the Rehabilitation Day Program made a gain of 26 points on the FIM+FAM**, discharging at 193/210 or "modified independent". Traditional outpatients with amputation made a gain of 11.1 on a modified FIM+FAM, also discharging at a "modified independent" level.
