Brain Injury Program: Mild Traumatic Brain Injury

Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI): A change in mental status due to trauma that may or may not involve loss of consciousness. Symptoms of MTBI include:

Post-concussion Syndrome: A concussion is a condition of impaired functioning of the brain as a result of violent impact. Days or months after a concussion, children or adults can experience these symptoms:

  • Poor concentration
  • Memory difficulty
  • Intellectual impairment
  • Irritability
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred vision
  • Sensitivity to light or sound

Madonna offers a Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Comprehensive Assessment and Treatment approach for outpatients. This service focuses on the medical, physical, cognitive (thinking) and emotional after-effects of mild brain injury in children and adults. Patients seen for this comprehensive assessment receive same-day recommendations and comprehensive, multidisciplinary, and coordinated programming to monitor and address injury-related thinking, emotional and pain-related issues, patient and family education, and other special needs, such as support for return to work. The medical team involved in the assessment and treatment include the following experts:

  • Physiatrist or Nurse Practitioner
  • Neuropsychologist
  • Physical Therapist
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Speech Therapist
  • Social Worker/Case Manager

Children and adolescents with mild traumatic brain injury are assigned to a separate team made up of the same disciplines with added experience in pediatrics.

Referrals: Referrals are accepted from physicians, case managers, attorneys, school personnel, or others. Madonna's outpatient case manager will coordinate referral with the patient's primary physician.
