Patient Care

Brain Injury Program: Outcomes

During the fiscal year July 1, 2006, through June 30, 2007, Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital discharged 218 inpatients and admitted 279 new outpatients with brain injury.

Several standard measurements are used to assess the outcomes of persons served.

Inpatient Outcomes: These outcomes are compared with national acute rehabilitation benchmarks compiled by the American Medical Rehabilitation Providers Association (AMRPA) database called erehabdata. The outcomes described below are for all patients with traumatic and non-traumatic brain injury discharged from Madonna's Acute Rehabilitation Unit (ARU) between July 1, 2006 and June 30, 2007.

Indicator Madonna ARU E-Rehab Nation E-Rehab Region

Madonna discharged the same percentage of patients to community settings as the national benchmark and fewer to acute care despite admitting them, on average, 2 days earlier than the nation. Patients stayed 5 days longer in ARU and were able to discharge with significantly higher functional scores (FIM*).

Ninety-two percent of inpatients rated their overall experience as "Excellent" or "Good". Eighty-nine percent of patients who responded to a telephone survey completed 3 months after discharge said they had maintained the gains they made during their stay at Madonna.

* FIM is a 7-point tool used by rehabilitation hospitals throughout the nation to assess a patient's function in 18 areas, including self-care, bowel and bladder function, transfers, locomotion, communication and cognition. Maximum score on FIM is 126.

Outpatient Outcomes: There are no national benchmarks for outpatient brain injury programs. The outcomes described below are outcomes for patients with brain injury discharged between July 1, 2006, and June 30, 2007.

RDP: Patients made an average FAM** gain of 15.71 points in an average of 22 day length of stay, with an average overall functional level, measured by FAM** of 180 of possible 210 (or an average score of 6, "modified independent") at discharge.

Outpatient: Patients made an average gain of 3.87 points on a subscale of seven FAM items, with an average overall functional level of 43.69 of 49 (or an average score of 6.24, "modified independent") at discharge.

Satisfaction: One hundred percent of RDP and traditional outpatients with brain injury rated their overall experience as "Excellent" or "Good" and 76% strongly agreed they would recommend the program to family or friends.

** FAM is a 7-point tool used by many comprehensive outpatient providers throughout the nation to assess a patient's function. It includes the 18 areas identified in the FIM, including self-care, bowel and bladder function, transfers, locomotion, communication and cognition, plus an additional 12 areas including such things as Employability, Community Re-Entry, and Car Transfers. Maximum score on FAM is 210.
