Patient Care

Burn Program: Who We Serve

Background: Many individuals with moderate to severe burns require rehabilitation to regain mobility and self-care skills. While most of their wounds are healed prior to coming to rehabilitation, these individuals often have lost significant range of motion and strength in their legs, arms and hands/fingers due to long periods of time with open wounds, splinting, and sometimes multiple surgeries for skin grafting procedures. This loss of range of motion and strength then impacts their ability to perform self-care, walk, and participate in their normal roles. The role of rehabilitation is to decrease these impairments and increase activity and participation abilities, while maintaining the integrity of their skin.

Volumes During its most recent fiscal year ending June 30, 2010 Madonna served 14 individuals with burn. 6 patients, who had multiple medical issues and required complex nursing care were served on the Long Term Acute Care Hospital (LTACH). 8 burn patients were served on the Acute Rehabilitation (AR) level. Many patients choose to continue to receive rehabilitation on an outpatient basis at one of several Madonna TherapyPlus locations.

Ages: The average age of individuals with burns served at Madonna last year was 30 years old. 3 patients were younger than 16 years old.

Geographic Area: Last year all of the individuals with burns served lived outside Lincoln, including three who lived out of state. As one of the only rehabilitation hospitals to be CARF accredited and to also have a formal Burn Program, Madonna serves people from a wide region.
