Neurological Program: Outcomes

During its most recent fiscal year ending June 30, 2009 Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital served 23 inpatients and 65 outpatients with neurological conditions.

Madonna uses several standard measurements to assess the outcomes of persons served and benchmark against national, regional and internal targets.

* FIM is a 7-point tool used by rehabilitation hospitals throughout the nation to assess a patient's function in 18 areas, including self-care, bowel and bladder function, transfers, locomotion, communication and cognition. Maximum score on FIM is 126.

** The FIM+FAM uses the FIM (above) plus 12 additional items which address higher level skills such as community access and school or work re-entry. Maximum score on the FAM is 210.


Outcomes for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2009 include:

  • Discharge to Community: 80% of inpatients served on AR were discharged to community settings, which was higher than the nation (76%) and region (74%) after an average length of stay of 20 days.

  • Functional Gains (FIM)Madonna inpatients on AR made excellent functional gains as measured by the FIM tool. AR patients made a gain of 21.5 which is greater than the region or nation, and discharged at 87.2 which is higher than the national and regional benchmark of 82.8.

  • Average Length of StayOn average, inpatients with neurological conditions stayed 18 days on AR.

  • Inpatient Satisfaction 80% rated their program as "Excellent" and 100% rated as either "Excellent" or "Good".

  • Maintenance of Gains In a telephone survey done 3 months after discharge, 100% responded that they had maintained their gains.

  • Outpatient Functional Gains Outpatients with neurological conditions made excellent functional gains as measured by the FIM+FAM tool.** Those served in RDP made a 15.5 gain on the FIM + FAM scale with an average discharge score of 176.5 of 210 or "Supervision" level. Traditional outpatients scored 49 out of possible 56 on a modified FIM+FAM tool at discharge, functioning at a "Modified Independent" level.

  • Outpatient Length of Stay On average, outpatients with neurological conditions recieved services for 16 days. More specifically, the number of visits by discipline include:

    Physical Therapy: 25
    Occupational Therapy: 13
    Speech Therapy: 8

  • Outpatient Satsifaction98% of outpatients with neurological conditions rated their overall experience as "Excellent" and 99% "strongly agreed" they would recommend Madonna to family or friends.
