The Communication Center of Excellence, located in the Institute for Rehabilitation Science and Engineering, focuses on collaborative research related to assistive technology, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), telehealth, and motor speech disorders. The Communication Center is dedicated to improving the lives of individuals with complex communication disorders through clinically applicable research, services, and education.

The mission of the Communication Center of Excellence is to conduct research in the development and improvement of technology and treatment strategies to reduce the functional limitations of individuals with complex communication disorders.

Research conducted in the Communication Center addresses three primary aims:

1. Develop technology for use in restorative and compensatory treatment for persons with complex communication disorders.
   
2. Develop and refine best practices in restorative and compensatory treatment to optimize the functional outcomes for persons with complex communication disorders.
   
3. Implement distance technology (telehealth) in restorative and compensatory treatment for persons with complex communication disorders.
