Adolescent & Children: Outcomes

During the fiscal year July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2009, Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital discharged 54 inpatients and admitted 248 new outpatients ages 18 and younger, all with varied diagnoses.

Inpatient and Outpatient pediatric rehabilitation programs across the country use different measurements to describe outcomes, which makes benchmarking impossible. At Madonna, the FIM* tool is used to measure functional improvement in children and adolescents ages 7 years or older on the inpatient side, and the FIM + FAM** is used for the same age of outpatients. Inpatients and outpatients under the age of 7 are measured using the Developmental Assessment for Young Children (DAYC) tool.

Inpatient Outcomes: The outcomes described below are for all inpatients who were 18 years or younger, all diagnoses, discharged from Madonna's Acute Rehabilitation Unit between July 1, 2008 and June 30, 2009.

  • Discharge to Community94% of patients were discharged to a community setting, exceeding our goal of 75%. 2% discharged to acute care and 4% to an institution.
  • Inpatient Functional GainsChildren/adolescents made excellent functional changes during their stay at Madonna. Those who were ages 7-18 years old gained an average of 32.5 points on the FIM* scale, exceeding our goal of 20. Children ages 6 and younger made an average point gain of 51 on the DAYC scale.
  • Predicted Outcomes On average, children and adolescents served on AR achieve 90% of the goals established on admission.
  • Average Length of StayInpatient children/adolescents stayed and average of 30 days, resulting in an average FIM gain per day of 1.6, which is higher than the target of 1.4.
  • Patient/Family Satisfaction 92.3% of inpatients or their family members rated their overall care at Madonna as "Excellent" or "Good".
  • Maintenance of Gains100% of patients/families who responded to a telephone survey completed three months after discharge stated the had maintained the functional gains made during their inpatient rehabilitation program.

* FIM is a 7-point tool used by rehabilitation hospitals throughout the nation to assess a patient's function in 18 areas, including self-care, bowel and bladder function, transfers, locomotion, communication and cognition. Maximum score on FIM is 126.

** FIM+FAM is a 7-point tool used by Madonna's outpatient program. It uses all of the FIM plus 12 additional items that capture higher level functioning such as community access and school or work re-entry.

Outpatient Outcomes: The outcomes described below are outcomes for outpatients 18 years or younger with varied diagnoses discharged between July 1, 2008 and June 30, 2009.

  • Functional Changes (FAM): Children and adolescents ages 7-18 served in RDP made an average FAM** gain of 14 points for a total score of 181 of possible 210 (or an average score of 6, "modified independent") at discharge. Traditional outpatients of the same age scored an average 49.8 out of possible 54.4 on a modified FAM tool, again discharging at a "modified independent" level of function.

  • Functional Changes (DAYC): For RDP and traditional OP combined, children under 7 made an average gain of 15.1 points on the DAYC, meeting our goal.

  • Satisfaction: 87% of RDP and traditional outpatients ages 18 years or younger or their family members rated the program "strongly agreed" and 100% either "strongly agreed" or "agreed" they would recommend Madonna to their family or friends.
