Jude’s Journey

Jude’s Journey
About Me / Why I participate in this event:

As many of you know, my two-year-old nephew, Jude Walz, began running a fever in January of 2018. After multiple trips to the pediatrician and urgent care, Jude was admitted to Children’s Hospital in Omaha and originally treated for Kawasaki’s Disease. In February, a rare and aggressive bacteria, strep anginosus, was discovered in Jude’s blood work. An MRI discovered that Jude had three abscesses in his brain and one abscess in his ocular cavity. He began receiving IV antibiotics immediately and continued the antibiotics for the next 11 weeks. Jude underwent surgery to drain his sphenoid sinuses, which were thought to be the source of the bacteria. The surgery was successful, but because of the severity of Jude’s case, there were many complications to Jude’s infection. In addition to Jude’s primary diagnosis, strep anginosus bacteremia, Jude also suffered from bacterial meningitis, a bone infection near the base of his brain, an infection of his right eye tissue and a stroke on the right side of his brain. After his stroke on February 4, 2018, Jude was transferred to the pediatric ICU (PICU) for three nights while his team worked together to stabilize his condition. After leaving the PICU Jude was able to have a Peripherally Inserted Cenetral Catheter (PICC line) placed, which made it much easier for Jude to work on regaining gross and fine motor skills impacted by his stroke, and to continue receiving IV antibiotics.
