Nurses make a difference at Madonna

Nurses make a difference at Madonna

Nurses are a very important part of every patient's transdisciplinary care team at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospitals.  We asked these nurses and a nurse aide to share why they work at Madonna and their favorite part about nursing:

Jayne Graeve, RN – Transitional Care Unit, Lincoln Campus

Q: Why did you choose to work at Madonna?

A: I have worked at MRH for over 25 years.  When I moved here a neighbor who was a nurse suggested I check out Madonna Rehab Hospital.  So I applied, and here I am 25 years later! It is so fulfilling when patients come back to tell us “thank you” for the care given while on our unit. To see them talking and walking out of Madonna is so rewarding.

Q: What do you like best about your role as an RN?

A: I knew I wanted to be a nurse when I was 5 years old and for Christmas that year I received a nurse's kit.  My mom was sick a lot while I was growing up and I just loved taking care of her.  It made me feel good inside to care for someone.  I was taught to treat and care for my patients as if they were my own mother or father.

Lovely Aquino, RN – MRSH-O

Q: Why did you choose to work at Madonna?

A: The first thing that comes to my mind is the word "excellence," to which entails Madonna Rehabilitation Hospitals. I would like to be a part of every patient's success, to make a difference in people's lives and most importantly, it's more of how they can bring out the best in me. Being a part of a patient’s success is such a great impact and made me realize, "Nursing will never be just a job."

Q: What do you like best about your role as an RN?

A: The patient is the central, most important part of the team. Putting myself in a patient’s situation helps me understand what they are going through. Professional skills and critical thinking are a plus. It's more of witnessing ordinary turn into extraordinary with regards to patient accomplishment. A glimpse of a patient’s success is the heart of a true nurse.

Chandra Lukas, Nursing Associate – Lincoln Campus

Q: Why did you choose to work at Madonna?

A: I have been working at Madonna for going on 16 years. Madonna was my first job when I came to the United States and I love working here. My favorite part of my job is seeing patients when they first come to the day they leave rehabilitation. I get to bond with, not only the patients, but with their families.

Q:  What do you like best about your role as a nursing associate?

A: I’m able to be more than just a nurse aide to patients, but more like family.  I have gotten six Angel Wings from patients who’ve used the Angel Wings program to recognize a Madonna caregiver.  I also bond with my coworkers who have told me they look up to me.

Mary Ternus, RN – Children’s Rehabilitation Unit, MRH-O

Q: Why did you choose to work at Madonna?

A: I knew I had to come to Madonna because I loved everything about their mission and values. I knew I would get to have more time with my patients. Having that long-term relationship with your patient is something that is very special. I give simply because I love giving back. It is important for all of us to take care of each other in this world, and if I have something to give, I know I'm helping to care for others.

Q: What do you like best about your role as an RN?

A: I love how the patients have the endurance and strength each day to wake up and make every day a better day.  It makes me want to also have a great day! Life is so short and it forces me to remember to take one day at a time and rejoice in the little things!
