Lawyer ready to give back after spinal cord injury

An aspiring lawyer, Shantel Thompson’s dreams of helping her community were put on hold after the unthinkable happened. She was shot and suffered a spinal cord injury. Shantel recovered at Madonna, fueled by her strong faith as she healed. She also shifted her focus to regaining strength and reclaiming her independence. “I don’t want that one moment to define me for the rest of my life,” Shantel said. “I still want to go on and become a great lawyer, have my own family one day, and help the people of my community.”

Elizabeth Thornton survived COVID-19 only to discover she had a severe case of Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare neurological disorder that causes the body’s immune system to attack itself. After months in the hospital, Elizabeth came to Madonna unable to walk or talk. Little by little, Elizabeth regained her strength and stability with the help of her care team, and she found joy in small victories, like doing aquatic therapy in our fitness pool. 

South Dakota six-year-old battles back from rare disease

Kyah Matthews was diagnosed with acute transverse myelitis at the young age of six, starting a journey of recovery that brought her to Madonna's Lincoln Campus. Utilizing aquatic therapy, physical, occupational and recreation therapies as well as the latest in rehabilitation technology, Kyah weaned from a trach and slowly began to regain mobility.
