Faith, expert care played equal roles in Lincoln priest’s recovery at Madonna

After an infection caused an amputation and eye loss for the Rev. Robert Matya, it became clear that he needed medical rehabilitation. The director of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Newman Center arrived at Madonna weak and unable to walk. Not only did he receive daily physician visits to manage his complex medical condition, but he also underwent physical and occupational therapy and received care from our spiritual care team. She spent weeks on a ventilator and underwent multiple surgeries, including amputations on both feet. She was forced to relearn how to walk, talk and even breathe on her own.
