Party planning promotes playful therapies for pediatric patients

At Madonna, our goal is to get kids back to play. We also know it’s important to incorporate fun and favorite interests into therapy. This week, as part of his rehabilitation, 5-year-old Mario Brothers fan Kai Maloney planned a Mario-themed party for everyone, and it’s safe to say it was a super smash! Kai and several other kids within the pediatric unit listened to music from the game, hunted for Yoshi’s eggs and even pinned the mustache on Mario. A great way to celebrate another week of hard work on the (Rainbow) Road to recovery!

Lynne Milimu is rarely seen without a smile on her face. Her care team at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospitals describes her as a ball of sunshine and a positive light. She spends hours in the cafeteria of the specialized brain injury unit chatting with other patients and cheering them on in therapy. But this is a transformation that didn’t happen overnight.. Lynne and her care team worked together to heal her mind and body after she sustained a brain injury as the result of a traumatic event on Mother’s Day.

After spending eight weeks recovering at Madonna, she returned home with a renewed outlook on life and a desire to pursue a career in physical therapy. Nearly three years after first contracting COVID-19, Sherri Magnett was still dealing with effects of post-COVID. She says she felt like people didn’t believe her when she described some of her symptoms. But, at Madonna’s post-COVID clinic, she says she felt validation. “It’s great to not think you’re crazy,” Sherri said. “It’s wonderful to not have people look at you like there’s something wrong with you and for the clinicians to go, ‘Yeah, we hear that. Yes, that’s common.’”
