Care received at Madonna inspires career path for Lincoln nurse

Growing up, Danni Grotzky says her grandpa was sick frequently. He had a stroke and came to Madonna for rehabilitation.

“He was here several times and ended up living his life out here,” Grotzky, RN, BSN, CRRN, said. “Seeing the staff take care of him in the way that they did, the way they presented themselves and gave him the best life he could have, is what drew me in.”

Once she was in the world of rehabilitation, Grotzky says the environment excited her. She knew this was her calling.

“I saw how they change people’s lives for the better,” she said. “People came in very sick and they would walk out, or they could go home in adapted ways to live their normal life again.”

Grotzky first started working at Madonna as a restorative aide in extended care. When she graduated from nursing school in 2013, she started working at Madonna’s Specialty Hospital. She transitioned to the ventilator assist unit as a night shift supervisor before taking on her current role as a quality risk manager.

“I oversee the employee health side of things and the quality risk reporting side of things to make sure we are up to date and doing the things that we need to do per CMS guidelines,” Grotzky said. “My favorite part is seeing the new employees come in. I get to see them frequently and make calls to them, and welcome them to Madonna.”

Her advice for young nurses just starting is to find a passion and stick with it. For 17 years, Grotzky has been doing just that at Madonna.

“The approach we use is all patient-centered,” Grotzky said. “We want to give the best that we can to our patients, and we always strive to do better, and that just really keeps me here.”
