Madonna Rehabilitation Hospitals offers a comprehensive stroke rehabilitation program for patients with mild to severe stroke. With multiple levels of inpatient care and outpatient services, Madonna can provide each patient recovering from a stroke the right type of care at the right time. Our CARF-accredited program serves adults and children nationwide who benefit from the combination of holistic caring and specialized technology utilized by clinicians with extensive training in stroke recovery.
Madonna’s latest piece of technology, the Armeo®Power, advances the hospital’s mission to provide world-class rehabilitation care. This robotic device completed the hospital’s collection of specialized equipment for patients who have little to no function of their arms and hands following a stroke, a spinal cord injury, a brain injury, or other complex medical issues.
“With the purchase of this technology, Madonna joined a select cohort of less than 30 rehabilitation hospitals in North America that offer the Armeo®Power,” Erin Engelman, OTR/L, inpatient stroke program leader on Madonna’s Lincoln Campus, said.
The Armeo®Power provides customizable robotic assistance for patients with little to no function in their arm(s), while its sister technologies, the Armeo®Spring and the Armeo®Senso, address moderately-functioning arms and higher-functioning arms, respectively. All three pieces of equipment are available at Madonna. Each one uses a digital library of game-like exercises that can help patients improve their strength and range of motion needed to complete daily tasks.
“Madonna offers very high-level technology and services that can help these individuals get back to what they want to do faster,” Amy Goldman, PT, DPT, Madonna’s stroke program manager, said.“ The Armeo®Power is hugely beneficial because you can get mass repetition of that movement and retrain the brain how to move that side of the body again.”
For Justin McMillen, a 46-year-old stroke survivor, the Armeo®Power proved valuable during his recovery. Upon arrival, Justin had little to no use of his right side. However, thanks to the Armeo®Power, the Wichita, Kansas, native soon regained function in his arm and hand. After weeks of intense physical and occupational therapy, Justin later walked out of Madonna and returned home to his two daughters. He is forever grateful for his Madonna care team and their expertise in stroke recovery.
“The therapists, the nurses, my whole team here has been more than supportive,” he said.
