Driver Retraining & Rehabilitation Program

The Madonna driving program was developed in 1987 to help clients determine if they are safe to develop skills or relearn skills to drive. The program can be used for a new driver with a disability, a seasoned driver after a change in their health or an older driver with age-related changes or family concerns.  Potential clients must be able to meet the requirements necessary to obtain a state driver’s license or learner’s permit.

The driver rehabilitation program has occupational therapists on staff with specialized training in a variety of different clientele including both physical and cognitive impairments.  They have also completed training to understand driving and the skills required to drive. We are proud to have a Certified Driving Rehab specialist (CDRS) on staff at both campuses.

The Evaluation

The driving evaluation consists of a clinical evaluation and a Behind the wheel evaluations. During the evaluation we take a thorough medical history as well as review their driving history.  Skills that are evaluated include reaction time, vision and perceptual skills, hand, arm and leg sensation, movement and control, ability to get in and out of the vehicle, problem solving, and judgment skills and basic driving knowledge.  The Behind the wheel evaluation is completed using Madonna’s training car which is equipped with hand and foot controls, as well as a training brake.

Adaptive equipment can be recommended following an initial driver evaluation. We may also recommend further training sessions to ensure safe use and skill level.  Each plan is developed to meet the individualized need of the client.  We work closely with specialized equipment providers and other resources to assure recommendations are completed properly.

Driver Retraining & Rehabilitation Program Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a doctor’s order?

A physician’s order is required with a medical diagnosis in order to schedule an evaluation. Ideally, we would like to get the referral with some clinical information and medical history so that we have a full picture of your history prior to the appointment. This information can be faxed to us at the time of your referral.

What will the evaluation entail?

The evaluation is a two part assessment including a clinical assessment and an on-road assessment. During the clinic portion, skills that are evaluated include reaction time, vision and perceptual skills, hand, arm and leg sensation, movement and control, ability to get in and out of the vehicle, problem solving, and judgment skills and basic driving knowledge. The B ehind the wheel evaluation is completed using Madonna’s training car, which is equipped with hand and foot controls, as well as a training brake.

What happens after the evaluation?

Recommendations will be reviewed with you at the completion of the evaluation. You will likely have one or more of the following recommendations:

  1. Safe to drive, no recommendations
  2. Unsafe to drive
  3. Adaptive equipment is required to drive
  4. Restricted driving is recommended
  5. Driver’s training is required for further assessment to determine safety and recommendations.

A report is shared with your referring physician. All recommendations require review and approval from your physician. If adaptive equipment is needed, then we will facilitate the referral and next steps for that service to a vendor.

Do I need to have a driver’s license to complete the testing?

A driver’s license or a learner’s permit are required for the initial evaluation. Out of state licenses are accepted.

What are the vision requirements for driver retraining?

We require you to meet the current state vision requirements for driving. We would recommend if you are unsure that you have an eye exam and have your best corrected vision at the time of the evaluation.

Does insurance pay for the evaluation?

Insurance is not billed for driving rehabilitation services. Payment is expected at the time of service. We accept cash, check or credit card.

We accept payment from outside sources such as vocational rehabilitation and worker’s compensation.

What if I choose not to do the evaluation?

It is your choice not to complete the evaluation. Your doctor will be notified if that is your decision. Depending on your physician, the next steps may include involving the Department of Motor vehicles that oversees your license status. You are encouraged to visit with your physician about the possible consequences of not completing the evaluation.
