Beautiful sunny skies greeted the 190 runners and walkers at Zorinsky Lake in Omaha for the 3rd annual Miles For Madonna on Saturday, September 22. The annual 5K run and 1-Mile walk was a fundraiser for Madonna’s St. Benedict’s fund, which helps patients and employees who are experiencing an urgent financial need with medical equipment, food, clothing, rent or utilities. In the 2016-2017 fiscal year, more than 300 individuals benefited from the fund, administered by the Madonna Foundation

The morning featured a Kids Fun Zone – complete with an appearance by a prince and princess from the Omaha Children’s Museum – a Cornhusker Corvette Club Car Show, healthy race fuel from HyVee and Eat Fit Go, as well as booths and prizes from additional event sponsors including Cox Business, Omaha Media Group, Scheels, Fat Brain Toys, Kiewit, Pitch, The MARK, GTI, Cunninghams Pub and Grill, REDSTONE and Village Pointe. Madonna’s TherapyPlus outpatient therapists were on board to help with any injuries, pre-race stretches and helpful tips for runners.

The sound of cheerful greetings between former patients and Madonna staff filled the air, as many took the opportunity to reconnect with their therapy teams and showcase their continued progress since leaving our hospitals. Many Madonna staff members were also joined by their families, including 13 new babies welcomed by Madonna moms over the last year!

The overall winner of the 5K was Scott Hammer of Rossville, Kansas, with a sizzling time of 21:22. The Kansan says his son’s fiancée is currently a patient at Madonna and is excited to travel the distance and participate.  “I just want to benefit a great organization. She has come so far since she’s been here. They have a wonderful staff, great facility and they’re going to get her all the way. She’s going to finish this.”, said Hammer.

Ky’Lee Baumert, Madonna physical therapist, won the women’s division with a great time of 22:05. “I love working at Madonna and represent everything that we try to tell our patients to do, which is persevere and keep working hard to get back to what you’re doing.”, said Baumert.

The Madonna Foundation extends our most sincere thanks to our sponsors and to all who ran, walked and volunteered for a fun and exciting fundraiser. Your support of the St. Benedict fun makes a real difference in the lives of those in need. Mark your calendars for next year’s event on September 21, 2019.
