One day in the spring of 2023 Renee Henry suddenly felt off. She tried to sit down, missed her chair completely and fell to the floor. The 66-year-old was experiencing a stroke. Every patient that comes to Madonna has their own recovery goals. For many, they’re determined to walk out the front doors on their own. For brain injury and stroke survivor Ashton Penrod, it’s all she thought about. From not being able to feel her left side to walking out all on her own, Ashton’s story reminds us how powerful we can all be.
As a mom and flight attendant, Emily Motycka was used to multitasking and operating at a very high level. A stroke in August at an airport in Seattle nearly brought life to a halt. But, with a strong desire to return to her family in Omaha and a strong support system, she’s proving the sky’s the limit for her recovery.
“Aaliyah was one of those patients that always brought a smile to everyone’s face, just to see her progress each day was amazing,” Nicole Ford, her physical therapist, said. “Everyone would make the comment, ‘holy cow, I can’t believe how great she’s doing,’ and it’s so true.
