Volunteering the gift of song to Madonna patients

Music, regardless of the genre, is powerful. In fact, for many, hearing a favorite song can strike a chord or can leave a lasting impression. The physical and mental healing benefits of music are also well-documented and just a few reasons why Katie Schroeder regularly shares her gift of song with patients at Madonna’s Omaha Campus as a volunteer.

“I come in for about an hour and a half each time and just play my guitar and sing some songs,” said Katie Schroeder, a 22-year-old who recently graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in music therapy. In late July 2017 she’ll start an internship before taking her board certification.

“I love I think just seeing people’s faces. When I am singing and playing, especially when they sing along because you can tell they’re so happy and that they recognize the song and that everybody loves music. It’s definitely a huge connector. I’ve always been interested in music, too, and then I am pursuing a music therapy degree right now so that’s another reason I think I’m so passionate about it,” said Katie.
